Welcome to the website of Branch 14 Niagara of The Retired Teachers of Ontario/les enseignantes et enseignants retraités de l'Ontario (RTO/ERO), a bilingual and voluntary organization led and managed by retired members of the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan.
A primary focus of RTO/ERO is to advocate on behalf of all members with all levels of government. RTO/ERO also partners with other like-minded groups to promote issues that affect seniors and the community at large.
RTO/ERO is comprised of 48 Districts with 46 Districts in Ontario and 2 Districts in British Columbia. Each District is run by volunteers who sponsor social, recreational and charitable activities. Our District covers the Niagara Peninsula from Lake Erie to the south, including Fort Erie and Port Colborne, Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake to the east, to the north we have the city of St Catharines and Lake Ontario, and our western boundary stops at a line from Grimsby and Port Colborne.
RTO/ERO has a national membership of over 65,000 retired educators. In our district we have just over 3000 members and are one of the largest RTO/ERO districts in the province. We have a variety of committees which work at supporting the membership. They include Health Services and Insurance, Pension Concerns, Political Action, Events, Membership and Recruitment, Goodwill and Communications.
RTO/ERO offers its members a variety of services and programs including an excellent health and insurance program. Information on these programs can be accessed on the provincial RTO/ERO website.
RTO/ERO is well-known for its comprehensive Health Plans that are competitive and affordable. Owned and managed by its members, RTO/ERO operates the largest Canadian retired educator plans covering 67,000 people. We provide premium rates and benefits that are not age-banded, i.e. you pay the same rate for the same coverage, regardless of your age.
Full members are retired teachers, and school and board administrators, receiving pension from the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan or who commuted their pensions and had more than 15 years of credited service. There are a wide variety of associate members, including: retired teachers with commuted or deferred pensions; educational support staff from school boards and schools, such as psychologists, consultants, office support staff, secretaries, custodians and board-employed bus drivers; retired teachers receiving a pension from private schools; and university and college faculty.
There is a lot of information on the Provincial Member's site. There are over 50 Fact Sheets, Position Papers on Children's Services, Education, Energy, and the Environment, to name a few. There are Tax Tips, and Computer Ease articles. Included also, is information on Senate proceedings, the Constitution, and so much more. Give it a good look one of these days.
